The Source: A Shakespearean Sonnet

The sun shines from the galaxy above,
And Lo! The stars submit to its great light.
Displayed as endless grace just like a dove
Released in freedom to the air in flight.

Yet in the midst of light does darkness hide,
Deceiving those we cannot find the source.
Confusion overtakes their weary minds:
Abandoned, roaming in the misty forr'st

To guide, protect, to love through good and bad,
To help us when the way cannot be found.
The light redeems all fears and failures had
And to His name their lives will then be bound.

So how can we show them just how to find
The Ruler and the Savior of mankind?

  1. Hanna, this is so beautiful. It really speaks to me, and I love the message you convey with the final couplet, drawing all together as a commission to Christians to somehow find a way to lead the lost and confused to Christ. Great work, and beautiful imagery. I love the dance you create between light and darkness.

  2. That ending couplet-- THAT is the question. And the fact that you leave us with a question when the couplet would normally provide a kind of "solution" to the problem makes it stick all the more. This is beautiful and hopeful Hannah-- really wonderful writing-- and as I read it, I too feel pressed upon by that question: what can we do to make Him that much more visible? I wrestle with this. He Himself must be the light, which means we simply must be transparently His, and let Him be radiant within us. Easier said than done, huh? Still, your phrase that our lives to Him "are bound" is appropriate for that reason. The first step must be surrender.

I am so thankful for this Hope and so thankful for your beautiful expression of it-- in this poem, and elsewhere.
